AMAZIGH Between Memory and Movement

Inspired by the traditional Ahidous dance of Morocco’s Middle Atlas, AMAZIGH is the latest creation by choreographer Filipe Lourenço, whose work explores the dialogue between contemporary dance and the choreographic and musical traditions of the Maghreb. Created for five performers and conceived for both theatrical and public spaces, the piece continues Lourenço’s long-term artistic research into collective movement, rhythm and cultural transmission.   

In AMAZIGH, dance, live music and voice are inseparable. The performers sing, chant and play the bendir drum while dancing, creating a shared rhythmic landscape that evolves throughout the performance. Drawing on the repetitive and geometric patterns of Ahidous, the choreography moves beyond folklore, opening space for improvisation and personal interpretation. Rather than reproducing tradition, the work reimagines it through a contemporary, collective and inclusive lens.   

Founded in 2009, Compagnie Filipe Lourenço / Plan-K brings together dancers, musicians and collaborators whose work investigates the connections between movement, music and cultural memory. With AMAZIGH, the company continues its exploration of ancestral practices while questioning inherited boundaries, proposing a performance where tradition becomes a living, evolving language shared between performers and audiences.
