De l’Europe – une discussion avec Joseph E. Stiglitz

L’Europe est un continent, un espace politique, une idée. C’est également une géographie, une histoire, des valeurs. Prix Nobel d’Economie, intellectuel engagé et internationalement reconnu, professeur à l’université Columbia, Joseph E. Stiglitz, né aux Etats-Unis, évoquera depuis Belgrade son Europe, celle d’hier, d’aujourd’hui comme de demain, d’un point de vue personnel, intellectuel et politique.

Cette discussion aura lieu le vendredi 12 décembre, à 19h00, à la Maison de l’Europe de Belgrade, à l’invitation de l’Institut français de Serbie. Elle sera modérée par le directeur de l’Institut français de Serbie, Amos Reichman.

Joseph E. Stiglitz est un économiste américain et professeur à l’Université Columbia. Il est également co-président de la Commission indépendante pour la réforme de la fiscalité internationale des entreprises (ICRICT) et économiste en chef de l’institut Roosevelt. Stiglitz a reçu le Prix Nobel d’économie en 2001. Il a été vice-président principal et économiste en chef de la Banque mondiale, ainsi qu’ancien membre et président du Conseil des conseillers économiques. En 2000, Stiglitz a fondé l’Initiative pour le dialogue politique (Initiative for Policy Dialogue), un groupe de réflexion sur le développement international basé à l’Université Columbia. Il fait partie du corps professoral de Columbia depuis 2001 et a obtenu le grade académique le plus élevé de cette université (University Professor) en 2003. En 2011, le magazine Time l’a désigné comme l’une des 100 personnes les plus influentes au monde. En 2024, il a été nommé académicien honoraire par l’Académie pontificale des sciences sociales, et en 2025 le pape François l’a nommé président de la Commission du Jubilé des Experts pour s’occuper des crises liées à la dette et au développement. Il est l’auteur de nombreux livres, parmi lesquels, plus récemment, The Road to Freedom: Economics and the Good Society et The Origins of Inequality & Policies to Contain It.

Nobel Prize winner in Economics, committed and world-renowned intellectual, professor at Columbia University, Joseph E. Stiglitz, born in the United States, will discuss from Belgrade his Europe, the one of yesterday, today and tomorrow, from a personal, intellectual and political perspective.

This talk will take place on Friday, December 12, at 7:00 p.m., at the European House in Belgrade, at the invitation of the French Institute of Serbia. It will be moderated by the director of the French Institute of Serbia, Amos Reichman.

Joseph E. Stiglitz is an American economist and a professor at Columbia University. He is also the co-chair of The Independent Commission for the Reform of International Corporate Taxation (ICRICT) and the Chief Economist of the Roosevelt Institute. Stiglitz was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2001. He is a former senior vice president and chief economist of the World Bank and a former member and chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers. Stiglitz founded the Initiative for Policy Dialogue, a think tank on international development based at Columbia University, in 2000. He has been a member of the Columbia faculty since 2001 and received that university’s highest academic rank (University Professor) in 2003. In 2011 Stiglitz was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2024 he was named an Honorary Academician by the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences and in 2025 Pope Francesco named him a Chair of the Jubilee Commission of Experts to address Debt and Development Crises. He is the author of numerous books, including, most recently, The Road to Freedom: Economics and the Good Society and The Origins of Inequality & Policies to Contain It.
