SICILIA TARENTELLA in Slovenia and Croatia

A performance on migratory heritage, recreated in a Franco-Italian-Slovenian version in Nova Gorica as part of the European Capital of Culture 2025.

SICILIA traces the family history of Clyde Chabot, whose Sicilian ancestors migrated to the United States and Tunisia before settling in France in 1956. Conceived as a family meal around a large table, this immersive performance blends memory and fiction, questioning transmission, forgetting, and the evolution of identities shaped by migration.

Created in 2011 and already performed more than 170 times in France and internationally (United States, Great Britain, Sweden, Italy, Australia), SICILIA will be recreated at the National Theatre of Slovenia as part of Nova Gorica 2025. This new version integrates dance and music from southern Italy with choreographer and dancer Rosa Voto and Jure Tori, a Slovenian musician.

Fusion of theatre, dance, and music

This recreation unfolds at the crossroads of art forms. Rosa Voto revisits the tarantella, an ancestral, cathartic, and collective dance, to explore exile and memory through movement. The Slovenian musician creates a dialogue between Italian inspiration and local sounds, opening a space where cultures and territories meet. Dance and music bring SICILIA a new sensory dimension, embodying both the absence of Sicily and the invisible transmission of family roots.

An intercultural and intergenerational project

At the heart of this recreation lies the question of transmission and the impact of migration on identity. Rooted in the knowledge inherited from her grandparents, Rosa Voto’s work connects different generations through dance. Brought to life by artists from France (Clyde Chabot), Italy and Australia (Rosa Voto), and Slovenia (Jure Tori), the project intertwines diverse artistic and cultural worlds.

In resonance with today’s European issues, SICILIA celebrates intercultural dialogue and the richness of shared heritage.

A tour in Croatia with Eurokaz

After Nova Gorica, SICILIA will be presented in Zagreb in collaboration with Eurokaz, a festival with a long-standing history. Two performances will be given there, with simultaneous translation into Croatian to reach a broader audience.

Through this tour, SICILIA continues its exploration of personal memory and collective history, adapting its form to local cultures.
